Biking to Stern Grove Festival 2026 and get VIP Entry!

I went to a Stern Grove Festival show, and I was blown away by how lucky I am to live in a place with this kind of free show put on in a beautiful city park. Even more amazing is how many people living in San Francisco and Daly City are biking distance from the park!

The Stern Grove Festival has a free bike valet and crowds of people going to the same place, which is a perfect recipe for riding your bicycle there. If you were thinking “How would I ride my bicycle to Stern Grove in 2026?” you’ve come to the right place!

Even better, I’ve gone to Stern Grove again myself in 2026, and if you use the bike valet you’re allowed to enter via the VIP entrance, which avoids long lines so you can potentially get a much better spot. More on that soon.

The wind in your hair, maybe the foggy mist of Karl in your face too depending on the day, and definitely some hills. I didn’t say it would be an easy ride, but it’ll be fun! Here are all the things to watch out for on your Stern Grove bike ride.

Free Bike Valet to Keep Your Bike Safe (and VIP Entry!)

Even though you hopefully have all the locking equipment to keep your bike safe (and maybe an angle grinder resistant u-lock), Stern Grove has a bike valet so you don’t have to worry about any of that! They’ve set up the bike valet on the north entrance at 21st Ave & Wawona.

The Bike Valet is open from 11am until 1 hour after the concert ends, so if you intend to hang out in the park after the show, maybe just lock your bike up on the sidewalk outside one of the two Stern Grove Festival entrances, or just go move it afterwards since the bike valet is very convenient.

If you get there too early, you can line up at the Check-in booth with your bike until the bike valet opens. Once the bike valet opens, that’s also when the check-in booth will allow you to go into the staging in the area just behind the booth. You then hang out there with the other actual VIPs until noon when you can enter the grove.

If you haven’t read between the lines yet, this means you can show up to the bike valet after 11am and get in a line that’s about as big as showing up before 9am at one of the other entrances, which means you can get a great spot in the grove. Even if you show up after the doors open, this bike valet entrance can get you inside immediately compared to huge lines at the other crowded entrances.

The Route to Stern Grove

Stern Grove is in the southwest corner of SF generally called The Sunset, and it’s surrounded by many smaller neighborhoods. See the map below.

The neighborhood around Stern Grove is relatively far from where I spend most of my San Francisco time, and therefore I don’t bike there often, but I’ve since gone a few times and have some routes to share. Check out my post about finding bike routes with Google Maps and it will give you the tools to find some good bike routes over to Stern Grove from wherever you are. Here are the two routes I’ve taken and would recommend:

Route to 21st & Wawona where the bike valet is if you’re riding a personal bike.

Route from Panhandle or Page St: If you’re coming from the panhandle area, you can bike through car-free JFK until Transverse Drive. Then you just take that to 20th which takes you all the way to Stern Grove! It’s a bit of a hill up 20th but you can do it! Another route is to ride down 7th Ave and zig zag as Google Maps describes until Stern Grove, but it’s a bit more elevation and turns.

Route from The Mission: If you’re in the mission area, make your way to the protected bike lane on San Jose Ave before the highway 280 entrance. Then go past Glen Park BART and take Monterey pretty much all the way there (I generally dislike biking on Monterey so if you’re ok with more elevation I’d recommend the Market/Portola route). The hill is mostly just Monterey Ave, and it’s similarly long but feels slightly harder. Same route back (but take the bike lane overpass to the other side of San Jose Ave skipping the Glen Park BART area!).

Route up Market/Portola: If you’re in between these 2 routes, the more direct but higher elevation route goes up Corbett Ave and then down Portola. Don’t forget to Turn right on Vicente instead of taking map directions all the wait to Sloat and then needing to go back up around to the back of stern grove. Similarly on the way back, start on Vicente, turn onto W Portal Ave to get to Ulloa St. Take Ulloa all the way up until it curves right on Sydney Way and you can cross the street and merge onto Portola Dr. Just be careful at the flashing red light which is very confusing since cross traffic could have a green light even if you see a flashing red. Once there you can continue on Market St and probably bomb down the hill instead of taking Corbett down…it’s a lot of fun but be safe and slow down if it’s wet or misty.

An e-bike would definitely help if you’re not prepared for some hill climbing, but any bike can do it if you’re feeling strong. I rode recently with some friends who used BayWheels ebikes and we cruised there easily. (Make sure to get the dockless e-bikes since there’s no station super close to the grove! The $2 fee is waived in that neighborhood.) Afterwards you’ll probably have to walk to the BayWheels station south of Stern Grove which isn’t too far but not right next to the grove. Carrying All That Picnic Paraphernalia on your Bicycle

Since this is a picnic venue, you may want to bring things like a blanket, food & drink, and maybe some low-profile lawn chairs (you’d have to get there early to set those up). If you don’t already have a rear bike rack to carry things, or you think those lawn chairs are too big to carry on your bicycle, you can borrow a bike trailer from the SF Bike Coalition!

The SF Bike Coalition offers free lending of bike trailers for carrying a lot of stuff on your bicycle. You have to be a member to take advantage of that perk, but if you’re riding a bicycle in San Francisco that’s an important part of supporting safe infrastructure!

Fill out the request form at least a few days before you go so you can schedule the pickup. The SFBC office is at Market & Valencia so you’d probably pick it up around there.

Extend Your Range with Bikeshare or Scootershare

If you don’t have a bicycle to ride, you can easily get to the venue with the other 2 wheeled devices on the streets. If you live out of town and want to avoid parking or crowds nearby, you can also park near a different bikeshare station and ride to the venue!

Bay Wheels bikeshare has a station 5 minutes walk from the 21st & Sloat entrance, so that’s an easy way to get to the park. The e-bikes would make any nearby hills a breeze! The easiest way is to pick up a dockless e-bike (the black one, not the white one), and park it to a pole somewhere.

The area around Stern Grove is more sparse with bikeshare stations, which means Bay Wheels waives the $2 fee they would usually charge if you don’t park a dockless e-bike at a station. This means you can ride an e-bike directly to one of the entrances and safely park it there (to some pole or other object) without paying the extra $2 fee. It’s a bummer we have to think about that, but that’s how it is with the lack of bikeshare competition in the city.

Bring Your Bike Lights

Since it’s summertime and the show ends by 5pm, you probably won’t need your bike lights. But if you are planning to stay a little later or meander a bit, this is an important accessory you’ll want to get home safely after dark!

I prefer to use locking bike lights so I never have to take them off, but if you don’t have any yet and you’re just looking for an easy option, here are some nice ones, these are my backup easy to carry lights (or extra cheap ones you can give to your friends!).

A front light hack is to just use a headlamp that’s useful for other uses too! You may already have one! There are ultra cheap ones these days or go for the popular brand name one. But make sure you have a rear bike light too.
