It’s May, and that means it’s bike month in America and San Francisco!
The most exciting event being Bike to Work Day! In San Francisco, that day is May 9th! We have a lot to be thankful for with new bike lanes and other infrastructure breaking ground and being planned all over the city, state, and country. Pledge to ride in your county and get entered for all sorts of free stuff! In San Francisco it’s a Levi’s commuter jacket!
It may not be Amsterdam over here yet, but we’re getting closer every day. I’d say we have the potential to make street designs here in the Bay Area that the Dutch aren’t even aware of if we put our mind to it.
The most fun part about biking to work on this day in the Bay Area is the Energizer Stations. Stop there for FREE tote bags, snacks, bicycle tune ups, and chatting with all the cool bike commuters. If you like seeing all the infrastructure improvements, this is also a great time to sign up for a membership with the SF Bike Coalition! (It pays for itself with discounts around town among other great things)
Do you need a refresher for urban bicycling? Or have you never ridden a bicycle before? There are free classes for that! This is one of the many great things the SF Bike Coalition is using with the money they get from memberships.
This is also the day when record breaking numbers of bicyclists commute on the streets. This really shows the city planners the increasing viability of this transportation mode and motivates more (much needed) spending on bicycle infrastructure.
So bike to work tomorrow, sign up for your local bike coalition membership to support infrastructure improvements, and most of all enjoy the ride. 🚲🚲🚲 Maybe you’ll decide this is something to do on a normal day as well.

But…I’m a stay home parent, I don’t have a job to bike to. Does biking my kid to school and biking for the groceries (and other errands) count?
Yes! That definitely counts! Any biking on bike to work day is a good thing. It’s just easy for most people to latch on to the “biking to work” thing.
